‘Adopt’ A Day of Disaster Relief or Transportation in New Hampshire

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

The New Hampshire (West) Chapter of The American Red Cross is running a great program this month aimed at giving people an appreciation of the cost of running their services. These services include: housing, replacement medical items, clothing, and mental health services. The Chapter states that the cost of providing assistance to its residents is on average $3,410 every week. The Adopt a Day of Disaster Relief or Transportation is a way of offering local businesses and foundations an opportunity to help provide crucial services to local residents.

You, or your company, can Adopt a Day of disaster relief by donating $452.29 to The American Red Cross of Southwestern New Hampshire. Many companies ask employees to give at company picnics, or other company events, and then match employee donations dollar for dollar. The donations will allow you, or your company, to adopt one or more days of disaster relief.

The cost to the Chapter of providing transportation services to members of the community is on average $1,453 every week. This includes rides to people of all ages for dental, therapeutic, and violence programs. To Adopt a Day of transportation, you, or your company can donate $290.69.

Contributors to the Adopt a Day of Transportation or Disaster Relief program will be recognized both in the New Hampshire (West) Chapter’s annual report and Adopt A Day web page.

Another way in which you can make a donation that will go towards the cost of adopting a day of disaster relief or transportation, is to donate a used car or other vehicle. The American Red Cross will then re-sell the vehicle to a new owner, or sells it as scrap metal. If the value of the sold vehicle is $500 or more, you can claim it as a tax deduction.

Clearly, the cost of providing such a range of important services is quite large. Creative programs such as the one outlined above are a great way of highlighting those costs. The program also provides an excellent opportunity for members of the public, and local businesses, to make a special effort to aid The American Red Cross.

Red Cross Exhibit Opens In Southern Carolina

Friday, March 27th, 2009

On March 15, an exhibition showcasing the history of The American Red Cross will open at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia. The exhibition, entitled ‘Our National Treasure: The American Red Cross’ will tour nationally for five years. This extraordinary exhibit will provide a glimpse into 128 years of history, as seen through the work of The American Red Cross.

The exhibition is divided into four areas that feature the major services provided by The American Red Cross. These areas are: Disaster Services, Blood and Biomedical Services, Service to the Armed Forces and Veterans, and, Health and Safety.

Items that will be featured include: a circa 1917 canteen wagon along with a coffee and doughnuts canteen display, replicating the snack stations The American Red Cross traditionally provides along with blood drives and disaster relief; posters painted by Norman Rockwell, and other artists; items from the founder of The American Red Cross, Clara Barton, including an invitation to the first meeting of The American Red Cross on May 19, 1881, and a medal she received during the Franco-Prussian War.

It is very likely that at some point during the next five years the exhibition will come to a town near you. As a result, anyone who is interested in attending the exhibition should keep an eye out for announcements from their local Chapter of The American Red Cross. Most Chapters have websites that are regularly updated.

A lot has changed in the last 128 years, however the dedication and services provided by volunteers of The American Red Cross has remained constant. Without the generous support from members of the public, the services provided today wouldn’t be available. As such, donations are extremely important. These donations come in many forms, from common ones such as money, clothing, and blood, through to the less obvious, such as cars and other vehicles. There is no doubt that when Clara Barton formed The American Red Cross she could never have envisioned donations of cars, and yet today they are slowly becoming a more regular addition to the above list of items. Hopefully, they will continue to do so.

Help The American Red Cross Help Others

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Throughout the country, the various Chapters of The American Red Cross are very active in local communities. They provide many services, including CPR Training, emergency assistance, and taking blood donations. It is sometimes easy to take these services for granted and we simply assume that the local Chapter of The American Red Cross will be there if we ever need it. Unfortunately, due to a variety of circumstances, it can become impossible for a Chapter to operate on a viable basis. When this occurs, the difference The American Red Cross makes becomes very clear indeed.

On the 12th of January this year, the Ashland County Chapter of The American Red Cross was forced to close its doors and become a service delivery unit under the jurisdiction of the regional office in Cleveland. As a result, the bookkeeping, human resources, and management of the Chapter will be conducted in Cleveland.

The Chapter expects no disruption to services as a result of this change. Local residents can be assured that services will continue to be provided locally, using trained Ashland County volunteers under the guidance of the Wayne County Chapter. Disaster response, including house fires, calls for assistance at emergency scenes, and all other services will continue to be provided by Ashland County volunteers. Service to Armed Forces will be brought back in house. However, while there will be no obvious change to services for Ashland County locals, there is no doubt that the loss will be felt and, in difficult times, most definitely noticed.

While the situation in Ashland County is the result of a number of factors, financial distress is a significant one. Donations from individuals play a large part in maintaining the service of Chapters of The American Red Cross. If you don’t have much time, or money, to spare at the moment, ask yourself if you have a used car or vehicle that you do not need anymore. Donations of used cars and other vehicles can be made at any time, either online or by phone. The vehicles are sold either as they are or as singular parts. When you are making a donation to The American Red Cross, remember that you can designate where the donation is to be spent. This means that Ashland County residents can be reassured, knowing that their donations are helping to maintain the provision of services in their area. It also means that the Ashland County Chapter of The American Red Cross may, at some point in the future, once again operate wholly under the direction of local residents.

Gala Dinner and CPR Training in the Mountain Area

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

For Non-Government Organizations, such as The American Red Cross, donations from ordinary members of the public are vital. Without them, these charities could not continue to provide the various programs and services that aid so many people in our communities. The help provided comes in many forms including shelter, clothing, blood, and emergency training. This assistance is particularly important following major disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. Members of the public can donate in many ways. One way is to donate car or other vehicle. To do this, simply ring The American Red Cross and within 24-48 hours your vehicle will be collected.

This month, the Mountain Area Chapter of The American Red Cross, situated in Asheville, North Carolina, is holding a special fundraising event. The “Under The Silver Moon Gala” will be held on the 21st of March at Deerpark on the Biltmore Estate. Tickets are $125 per person and include dinner, entertainment, and the opportunity to participate in both silent and live auctions. The auctions feature artwork by well-known American artists, fabulous trips, and dining delights. For more information, visit the Mountain Area Chapter webpage.

Saturday the 28th of March is ‘CPR Saturday’ throughout the Mountain Area Chapter. This is the one day of the year on which the Chapter waives the usual $35 fee for CPR training. Last year, over 300 individuals took advantage of this opportunity and received certified training. Classes teach CPR training for both adults and infants, and are held in both English and Spanish. The Chapter webpage provides a list of training locations in Buncombe, Henderson, McDowell, Haywood, Transylvania, and Polk. People who are interested in receiving this training should note that reservations are required.

The Mountain Area Chapter is just one of many Chapters of The American Red Cross situated throughout the United States. All of them regularly hold events such as those listed above. To find out what is going on where you live simply follow the links on The American Red Cross website.

The Tri-County Area Does Its Bit For Red Cross Month

Friday, March 6th, 2009

By now, many people are aware that President Obama has proclaimed March to be Red Cross Month. All Chapters of The American Red Cross will be particularly active in the community during March as they hold various activities. Tri-County area Chapter members will be presenting Red Cross Ready seminars throughout the area. These are particularly valuable seminars as they assist families to prepare for disasters and other emergencies by educating people about how to be prepared for a disaster. The seminars are only one hour long so there is no excuse not to attend. It could save your life, or the life of someone you love.

Throughout March, the Tri-County Chapter of The American Red Cross will be holding blood drives and various fundraising initiatives. Local businesses will be showing their support by selling American Red Cross Squares to customers for $1. Donors will be able to write their names on the squares, which will then be displayed on the walls of the businesses.

TD Bank kicked off Red Cross Month on the 2nd by donating $50,000 towards the Tri-County Chapter of The American Red Cross. This money will help fund the Chapter’s medical transportation service which provides free and low cost travel to medical appointments for seniors and low-income residents of the Tri-County area. This is an absolutely essential service because without it many senior citizens, who generally require more medical attention than the rest of us, may not be able to access health services they need. All of us can help to maintain this service by making our own donation. You may even want to consider donating a used vehicle rather than selling it. If you have been reading the news articles here, you will no doubt be aware that vehicles that have been donated to The American Red Cross are sold with the profits going towards programs and services throughout the Tri-County area.

Twin Cities Heroes Breakfast

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Heroes come in many forms. From mothers and fathers, to police, and firefighters, there are many amazing people in our communities who sometimes don’t receive the recognition they deserve. On April 21, the Twin Cities Chapter of The American Red Cross is holding a Heroes Breakfast from 7:30-9:00am at The Depot in downtown Minneapolis. The Heroes Breakfast is a chance to say thankyou to all the heroes who have done so much in our community. The breakfast costs only $50, $25 of which is tax-deductible.

“Ready Awards” will be presented to heroes in 8 categories. The categories recognize that heroes come from all walks of life, and are heroes for many different reasons. For example, the “Youth Good Samaritan Ready” award will be presented to a young man or woman, under the age of 21, who displayed courage and caring upon encountering an unusual, significant or unexpected incident. For more information on the Heroes Breakfast visit the Chapter homepage and book your ticket before April 10.

Events like this one are important because they remind us of the hard work that volunteers such as those of The American Red Cross do all year round. Donations can provide much needed help and can be made in a variety of forms. These include donations of blood, money, planned giving, and donations of used cars and other vehicles. Vehicles are re-sold or stripped of parts and the profits go towards the various programs run by The American Red Cross. Vehicles can be donated by contacting The American Red Cross either by phone or online.

If the Heroes Breakfast inspires you to volunteer and you live in the Twin Cities area you are welcome to join The American Red Cross volunteer team of 1400 individuals. By becoming a volunteer you will meet a great bunch of people, learn many valuable skills, and enjoy the feeling that you are making a positive change in your community. Of course you do not have to live in the Twin Cities area in order to be a volunteer. Volunteers, like heroes, can be found all over our country.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

March is finally here and hopefully the new season will bring better weather than we have been suffering through lately. Throughout the year one thing remains constant: the hard work of the volunteers of The American Red Cross. We do not need to be reminded that the amazing work done by this organization would not be possible without donations from members of the public.

The members of the Southeastern Michigan chapter of the American Red Cross need no reminder that March is here. They are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a Pre St. Patrick’s Day Party on the 15th of March at Gus O’Connor’s in downtown Rochester. The party will feature a traditional Irish dinner, live music, and drink specials. The entire $15 cost for the evening will be donated to the Southeastern Michigan chapter to assist in their programs. Further details are available from the chapter homepage.

Some people may wonder how their donation helps in a practical sense. Here are some facts that will help answer this question. $25 provides a pair of shoes for a child, or ten hygiene kits. $50 provides groceries for a family of two for a week. $100 provides jackets for two adults.

At this time of economic difficulty our wallets are lighter than usual but this does not mean that we cannot contribute to The American Red Cross. For example, many people do not know that it is possible to donate a car or other vehicle. The car will be picked up within 24-48 hours of the donation being made. Profits from the donation help fund the various programs run by The American Red Cross.

Meanwhile we hope that you will join us in celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Rochester.

Giving A Hand At A Local Level

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

We are all well aware of the great work The American Red Cross volunteers do in emergency disaster situations both at home and abroad. Who can forget the Tsunami that struck South East Asia or the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina? The American Red Cross has provided a great deal of assistance to those people affected by these terrible natural disasters. Unfortunately, it is sometimes easy to forget about the ways in which The American Red Cross is making a difference in our local communities. In fact, you don’t have to go far in order to see volunteers at work helping our neighbors and communities.

The American Red Cross Chapter of Greater Illinois has already helped more than 75 families recover from disasters since the start of this year by providing emergency accommodation, food, and clothes among other things. This level of support would not be possible without donations and assistance of volunteers from members of the local community.

You may be wondering what you can do to help. The American Red Cross gratefully receives all manner of donations from blood, food, clothes, and even donations of cars. You may find the last item surprising but donated cars are sold and the profits are then used to fund relief programs both locally and nationally. So next time you decide to buy a new car, why not make a car donation to The American Red Cross? Who knows whom you may be helping.

And speaking of helping, the Greater Illinois Chapter of The American Red Cross has established a unique project called the BookMobile program. This program helps young children to improve their reading skills by providing books to kids’ Title I schools at no cost to either the schools or the children. This program helps provide 3 books a year to 3000 students in the Greater Illinois area. Programs such as these are only possible because of donations made to The American Red Cross.
