Blow Away Those Monday Blues

Monday, May 18th, 2009

If you like the idea of helping to boost funds for the American Red Cross and enjoy playing golf, rather than something like car donation, you might prefer to attend the ARCNCA 6th Annual Invitation Golf Tournament that is taking place on Monday June 15th at Lowes Island Club, 20391 Lowes Island Boulevard, Potomac Falls, VA, 8am – 5pm. As part of the package when you participate in this event you will be a recipient of a golf shirt, a choice of one TaylorMade tee gift package that retails up to $700, as well as a video swung analysis that will undoubtedly help you to improve your game – off the tee anyway.

This major event, along with regular auction sales of vehicle donations aims to attract vital cash to the organization. Those attending can buy into a variety of sponsorship packages that range from $1500 for individuals as a Friend of Red Cross, through a Tournament Foursome and up to corporate packages starting at Bronze then Silver and finally at Gold Sponsor level for $20,000. One lucky Title-Platinum Sponsor will be awarded for $50,000.

It’s a great way to start the summer and if the weather stays fine it’s sure to be a terrific day out. The hospitality and congenial atmosphere are guaranteed to maintain the popularity of this event. Big fundraisers heighten awareness and receive good media coverage but the ordinary blood, cash or car donations are still needed through the year from the public so don’t give up on the smaller things like vehicle donation even if you do manage to get to one of the big events. Blood, cash and car donations are our bread and butter!

We’d love you to be able to attend and meet other good folk who support us so contact us by sending an email to events@redcrossnca.org, pencil the date in your diary to keep it free and enjoy a Monday that will blow away any blues with just a red cross and a handy set of clubs.

Choose Your Charity

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

You get to choose where the money raised from your car donation goes to when you opt for vehicle donation with the American Red Cross…and boy do you have a heap to choose from. The American Red Cross is involved in providing emergency services in response to disasters – either natural, like tornadoes and hurricanes, or manmade like fires and explosions. They don’t ask questions about who to help they just help everyone who needs them. Your auto donation could help to provide medical resources and transport, training in first aid, community and youth education programs to prevent the spread of disease and infection and employment for those who need work…because they can and because there’s the need.

You might not have time to be a volunteer; you might not have the means to sponsor a project and you might not be able to attend a blood drive because of health complications. You can still help by raising awareness and if you happen to have an old car you are considering getting rid of – donate your car to the American Red Cross. Not only would your vehicle donation help to further the work of this magnificent charity but it won’t cost you a thing; getting in touch with the organization and collection of the car are absolutely free. Take down this number, or even better if you are in a position to make an immediate auto donation, dial it now…[800-737-0165] and talk to the operator who will ask for your address details so they can arrange pick up of your car donation.

Once your vehicle is with the American Red Cross they will put it into an auction sale and use the money made from its sale to replenish the supplies so needed in emergencies or fund one of their programs unless you specifically state where you want the proceeds to go, which you are perfectly entitled to do. The American Red Cross will honor your request and make sure that your help goes to where you want it to go. If your situation doesn’t allow you to do this charitable act, do your best to let as many of your friends know as possible.

Even Beat-up Old Jalopies Can Help

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Don’t trash your unwanted old car, donate your car to the American Red Cross and help raise vital funds so they can continue with their excellent work in helping communities in times of crisis. Yeah, yeah – how much is that going to cost me? It’ll cost you nothing; everything is absolutely free from the phone call [800-737-0165] to the collection from your door, often within a day of donating your vehicle. I’m sure you’ll agree that the American Red Cross is a very deserving charity and if you could do something to help, you would. If you log on to your local chapter all the information is there.

Don’t worry if the vehicle donated is a heap, a beaten up old jalopy that has seen better days that now just takes up space in the yard; even a sad old car can be used to provide spare parts for other vehicles that have been donated that are then sold off at auction to raise cash for a variety of projects the American Red Cross is involved with. For over a hundred years in Washington DC, without government assistance, the American Red Cross has responded to disasters, helped to provide employment and initiated innovative schemes to provide health education as a means to avoid the spread of disease.

Today there is the possibility of a swine flu pandemic, something that could affect any one of us. Rather than trading in your old car and maybe not even getting the price you had expected in the current economic climate, you could donate your auto instead and if it’s worth more than $500 you might be eligible for a tax deduction by donating a vehicle to charity. If your car is going to cost you money to get it towed away, ring the toll free number and donate your car to the American Red Cross and they will take it away for you. Some companies have faced such a downturn in their business they can no longer afford to retain a fleet of company vehicles and wouldn’t get the market value for them. If you are in this position or know someone else who faces the same problem, pass on the message and do your good deed for the day. Say, “I’m going to donate my car!”

Babysitting Program

Friday, May 15th, 2009

It is so hard to find a reliable, trustworthy and competent babysitter but if you engage a sitter who has undergone the Babysitter’s Training course run by ARC providers your mind will be eased knowing you have a safe and responsible babysitter! The course is designed for 11 to 15 year olds and covers areas such as:

• care for children and infants
• being a good leader and role model
• making good decisions and solving problems
• keeping the children you baby-sit and yourself safe
• handling emergencies such as injuries
• illnesses and household accidents

There’s even help with writing resumes and interviewing for jobs.

The course, supported by ten downloadable PDF File resources can be completed in a day. They include a babysitter’s report card, business card templates, family information card, family interview form, parental consent and contact form, resume template, safety inspection checklist, self-assessment tool and an activity booklet. The beauty about any course accredited by the ARC is that the person who participated has been motivated to improve their skills and knowledge, has attended voluntarily and has done the work required to gain certification.

The Babysitter’s Training course is just one of the many programs run by the Red Cross, which relies on charitable donations to support its work in the local community. Appeals are one way of raising funds and often they are short-lived so the background stand-bys like auto donation are essential. There might not be much glamour in accepting vehicle donations and car donations for auction but they do raise considerable sums. Year round the good people who decided, “I’m going to donate my car to charity,” make a difference by ensuring programs like the Babysitter’s Training courses can be delivered, empowering our young people and qualifiying them for serving their community.

If you want to enroll in the Babysitter’s Training course, get in touch with your local Chapter. To find out where that is, log on to the main red cross site at www.redcross.org and under the tab with the map ‘your local red cross’, type in your zip code for your nearest chapter.

2009 Fire and Ice Ball

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

It’s time to party! Cinderella shall go to the ball. Doesn’t that sound wonderful? It’s not until October, which can’t come soon enough for folk. Everyone loves the summer but once Fall starts there’s really nothing on the calendar to excite anyone until Thanksgiving. It’s on a Saturday so thankfully very few will have to take any time off work to get ready. There’s such a lot to think about. Will the summer tan still be glowing on the skin by then or will it have faded and a fake top up be required? Regular manicures means nails should be okay and of course there’s hair to get done and then there’s the gown. Oh! The public just can’t wait for this baby. Roll on October 17th; Mellon Auditorium where all the guests in their finery will join in with the assembled company to salute the Red Cross support of the US Armed Forces.

Little bit of inside information: fortune has smiled on one lucky lady (no names like I promised!) – her boss in her new job has taken a table for eight (it cost him $5,000; she doesn’t know if it’s tax deductible or not but she doesn’t care, it’s a perk she’ll enjoy!) but general admission only costs $400 per person…to attend a ball – that’s got to be a great deal.

This is just so far removed from the humdrum, bland and boring things she normally does that she’s beside herself. I suppose she’d better get used to the idea and practice being underwhelmed so that she can retain some decorum and not let her boss down; she don’t want to lose her job after all. [Really, behave and be good!]

The American Red Cross – people think they’re all about blood donations, cash donations and vehicle donations, auto donations, car donations…donations, donations, donations. Sometimes appearances can be deceptive! It’s not just about trying to get your money, your blood, your time or getting you to donate your car or the guy next door to donate a car – these guys know how to party- check out the 2009 Fire and Ice Ball!

A Clear And Present Danger

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Hopefully there won’t have to be a response to the widely anticipated swine flu pandemic that has infected people across the globe. Most of the confirmed cases outside Mexico appear to be only mild forms and the patients are recovering well. There has unfortunately been one death in Texas among the 109 confirmed cases at April 30th 2009. The World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to  Phase 5 on April 29, 2009. A Phase 5 alert is a “strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short”.

As usual, that stalwart of our safety and well-being, the American Red Cross has some valuable advice at this time. Washing hands and paying close attention to symptoms of illness are just some of the things the public can to do help reduce the risk from the swine flu (H1N1) outbreak, the American Red Cross said today. “This is a serious situation that has the potential to spread, and it is a good time for families, businesses and organizations to follow good public health practices and to review and update their preparedness plans,” said Scott Conner, Senior Vice President of Preparedness and Health & Safety Services at the American Red Cross. “Taking steps to prepare for potential emergencies in advance can go a long way in making families feel safer.”

The American Red Cross urges the public to remember these simple actions:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective when soap and water aren’t available.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Catch it! Bin it! Kill it!
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick and stay home if you are feeling sick.

As ever, your help is needed by the ARC and vehicle donation is one way of making a difference. If you donate your car, money can go to supplying essential resources; a vehicle donation can raise a good lump of cash. You might need their help sooner than you think so consider an auto donation or some other vehicle donation to raise money as soon as you can.

Hit It!

Monday, May 11th, 2009

There are over 600 out of the 700 or so Red Cross Chapters in the US that have websites you can link to but with HQ being in Washington DC it’s probably the chapter that receives most hits from browsing individuals. It’s coming up to three years, on the 11th of May, since the American Red Cross Capitol Hill Day when the 125th anniversary of the organization was celebrated.

Running an organization that coordinates the work of over half a million volunteers and 35,000 paid employees is no easy task, particularly when the amount of money required to fund operations is so considerable. Monies raised, 91 cents out of every dollar, go toward community projects and programs, our supply of blood as well as the more highly profiled emergency and disaster responses that we are called to…and who can predict when they might happen or how disastrous they might be. One of the most effective ways to raise money has been through an auto donation kindly made to us. When you donate your car to us we can turn it into cash by selling it at auction. Even if your vehicle donation is just a relief for you to have had an old auto taken off your hands you can still feel proud that you have made a contribution – it might be useful for spare parts if it’s not worthy of auction. Thank you.

Just as you may not have any further need for your old auto there are many people who need a replacement vehicle and can’t afford to buy one new off the forecourt. Not only will you be helping us through your car donation but you will be giving someone else the chance to purchase a vehicle that might otherwise be beyond their reach. Get in touch with your local Chapter to find out just how easy it is to make a vehicle donation and make sure you tell your friends about this initiative so that they too can help us to help those in need.

Keep up the good work DC; you’ve set the standard for others to follow.
