Goodwill Looks to Promote Diversity within its Programs

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Goodwill Industries has done much to help enhance the community during its time, but lately there has been something of a shift in emphasis. The fact that the vehicle donation program has been so successful is a testament to the hard work of the people at Goodwill, but these days there are new programs that the company is promoting.

Vehicle donation work has given Goodwill Industries the resources that it needs to help people all over the Washington, D.C. area, but lately they are trying to do more to help each and every member of the community. What this means, specifically, is reaching out to other cultures and people who might be new to the country. In order for these people to have great success in America, they need to be educated about the language and how the working world runs. This is what Goodwill Industries is looking to do with many of their programs.

The fact of the matter is that it is tough to get a job right now, especially if you have some road blocks standing in front of you. Goodwill understands this, so they are doing everything in their power to give people the tools that they need. For instance, interested people can take an English course to learn the language a little bit better. Additionally, there are programs designed specifically to teach new Americans about what it takes to land a good job.

All of these things are being used to help Goodwill branch out from its vehicle donation outpost. While those efforts are still strong and they are the backbone of the organization, vehicle donation is not all that the charity is about. Truly helping to enhance the overall atmosphere and the success of the community at large is a huge concern, and it’s being pushed hard in the entire metro D.C. area.

Goodwill Industries provides alternatives to employment

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

It’s no secret right now that jobs are tough to come by, and that many individuals have been laid off from their old position. With that in mind, Goodwill Industries of Washington, D.C. is doing their part to enhance some of the opportunities for people who don’t have gainful employment.

The program is another one in a long line of things that Goodwill is doing to help the community. People should not be a stranger to their vehicle donation program, as it stands as one of the nation’s most successful charity fundraising efforts. Folks should know, though, that Goodwill Industries is about much more than just vehicle donation. They are all about helping people, especially in times of crisis and need.

That is where we are right now. The times are getting a little bit difficult and that has caused a need for more programs for the jobless. What things are being offered? Most of these things have to do with staying active, both with the mind and the body. Dance classes, exercise classes, and therapy classes are among some of the most popular things being done right now.

The program also seeks to help those who have some sort of physical or mental disability. It takes special care to provide meaningful programs for those individuals, and seeks to enhance their experience.

As you can see, vehicle donation is only one part of a very large puzzle for Goodwill. The idea is to make the Washington community a better place to live, and these things put people into action, even when there aren’t job opportunities. By staying sharp, these individuals give themselves a chance to jump right back into the job market when something opens up.

Though vehicle donation is still high on the list of priorities and people are still being asked to consider vehicle donation as a form of charitable giving, these alternative charity projects are helping Goodwill stay on top of the problems for the community. It’s an effort that is both expansive and expensive, but it’s well worth the costs, according to those in charge.

Goodwill Industries Opens the Door to Employment for Many

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

One of the long standing efforts for Goodwill Industries has always been its auto donation program, which receives the bulk of its time and effort. When Goodwill first pops into many people’s heads, they immediately turn to the auto donation program and fail to realize the other things that the organization is doing to help people in the community.

These days, one of the primary focuses is breaking down the barriers to gainful employment that keep many people from finding good jobs. This is as important as ever right now, with the economy down in the dumps.

So how is Goodwill Industries going about doing this? Mainly in the same way that they attack their auto donation program. They are doing it with the hard work and dedication of lots of people. This is especially true in D.C., where the efforts to open up job windows have been turned up.

The program seeks to give people the training and the knowledge necessary to at least be competitive in the current job climate. Some folks can’t get jobs because of a disability, and Goodwill Industries is working hard with their long-term services program for these people. Improving the quality of life and showing these people that there are available opportunities is a huge part of the equation.

Goodwill is also working directly with businesses in some industries to encourage the hiring of people who might have a checkered background. Regardless of what problem might have been in the past for these individuals, the program seeks to give them a new start. This is an example of yet another hands on program to improve both the quality of life for individuals in Washington and the community at large. It’s a worthy supplement to the already successful auto donation program, which pushes on all over the country.

Though auto donation remains a primary focus for the organization, they want people to experience the positives of programs such as this one, as it adds much to the community.

English Classes Power Goodwill Industries Efforts

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

One of the focuses for those people running Goodwill Industries in the last few months has been to improve some of their secondary services, doing things to help out with the community at large. At least in Washington, D.C., they are doing that lately. With the growth of Goodwill’s nation-wide English instruction program, more and more people are getting a chance to assimilate into American culture.

The program seeks to teach English as a second language to those people who might have come to America from elsewhere and it provides a very necessary service. Though some folks might only know Goodwill Industries as those folks who ask you to donate car parts or other things, it is apparent that they are doing more and more to touch the community in other ways, too.

While it remains a very real focus of Goodwill to encourage folks to donate car items that they might not need anymore, the struggling economy has made the charity reach out in other ways. This program is one of many new programs designed to give people something to do. While the programs that push people to donate car parts might be good for collecting revenue, this is a program good for helping the community come together as one. It goes along with the job help programs that give unemployed people something to keep themselves busy.

The success of this program and many like it around the D.C. area has been good thus far. There are some very skilled instructors helping people figure out English in a low pressure environment. These programs are geared towards helping people better understand their fellow workers and their bosses in the workplace. The idea is to improve productivity, thus helping out the economy in a complete win-win situation.

Next time you think about Goodwill Industries, know that they are doing more than hoping that you donate car parts. There are many ways to help out, and these programs are just another example of that.

Goodwill Job Training Program Helps Washington Area

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

When most people think of Goodwill Industries, they think of things like the well publicized vehicle donation program. They think of the donation centers and all of the community works that are undertaken by the organization. That is all well and good, but there is a little bit more to Goodwill Industries than just vehicle donation.

The people at Goodwill in the Washington, D.C. area are working really hard to make real life changes to the metro area. Chief among their projects is a new job training program, which looks to put people in position to obtain gainful employment. This is especially important now, as jobs are difficult to come by. If people in the area are going to be employed, they have to have the necessary skills to stand out in a difficult climate.

This is one of the most important projects that Goodwill Industries puts on, in addition to its vehicle donation program. In these trying times, the folks at Goodwill have realized that helping the community is about much more than taking up donations and helping out during the holidays. It is much more about doing things to enhance the community and its future. With the new job training programs, people get necessary skills training to help them succeed in interviews and to help them succeed when they actually gain employment.

The good thing about the program, at least in D.C., is that it teaches not only the hard skills of getting the job done, but also the other skills associated with workplace success. How do I dress? What do I say? What does it take to have big time success? These are all very real questions, so they are things that the program works hard to instill in participants.

While you might hear more about vehicle donation than any of the other Goodwill Industries programs, know that they are doing more than just taking up collections to help the community. Though vehicle donation remains chief among their charity efforts, this is one program that is putting people in the position for both instant and sustained success.

Seattle Goodwill to Sponsor Book Drive in April

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Seattle Goodwill was founded in 1923. Over the years, their programs to help with job training and job placement grew along with the needs of the region. Today, they run 17 retail stores throughout Central and North Puget Sound. They continue to provide top notch job training and education services at nine job training centers around the area.

To help with their efforts, they’re holding a Book Drive during the month of April 2009. Citizens receive a 30% off coupon toward an item of their choice when they donate their gently used books. It’s programs like this (and many others) that make Seattle Goodwill so special. A Book Drive doesn’t seem like a lot, but for some people, access to books and educational materials can lead to big changes in their life.

To keep all their programs and operations running, they depend on your books, but they desperately need other donations as well. From other smaller items like clothes, to medium sized items like furniture, they’ll take almost anything as long as it’s in good condition or can be repaired. They’ll even accept vehicle donations.

You may know this already, but even if you do, this might be the nudge you need to go through with donating your car or truck. If you’re worried about the process, Charity Dispatch can help you with every step, even letting you pick which Goodwill Industries location receives the car donation. If you’ve thought about donating a car, but you haven’t gone through with it yet, the time to get it done has arrived.

Seattle Goodwill has a rich history in the region of helping people with education, training, and giving them hope – something so vital to success in life. To continue their mission, it’s up to you – if you can afford it – to donate a vehicle or some other large ticket item that can go a long way in helping people in your community. Without vehicle donations and other forms of donations, Goodwill Industries wouldn’t be able to help as many people become independent and self-sufficient. And that would be a shame.

Goodwill Accepts Car Donations for Wheels-to-Work

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Goodwill Industries helps a lot of people all over the United States. From providing affordable clothes and housewares to helping with job placement, they’re all about giving people a little help to make their lives better. Goodwill saw a need for people trying to better their lives – the need for reliable transportation. With that in mind, they created the Wheels-to-Work program.

There are qualifications that people wanting assistance with transportation need to have, so you can rest assured that any car you donate will be given to a family who needs it. From having a job to having car insurance, Goodwill makes sure those participating in their Wheels-to-Work program have everything they need to be on the road legally – and stay that way.

Donating your vehicle through a service like Charity Dispatch can help make the whole process easier for you. Working with Goodwill Industries, Charity Dispatch will help you with every step of the process when you donate your car. Don’t let a potentially confusing process stop you from donating your car.

Once you donate your car, it’s first checked out for any safety issues. Once it’s given a clean bill of health, it’s either given to a family in need (that passes the requirements for the Wheels-to-Work program) or auctioned off, with the proceeds going to help Goodwill Industries in other ways.

Giving your vehicle to the Goodwill Wheels-to-Work program is a great way to do your part to help your fellow humans. By working with Charity Dispatch, you can make sure the whole process is as pain free as possible. If you want to help someone out by donating your car, but you aren’t sure how to go about it – Charity Dispatch can help you through the whole process, making it easier than ever to donate your car to a good cause.
