Greater East Bay Goodwill Industries Goes the Distance

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay has served Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano Counties in California since 1919. Providing services from job training to life skills training, they use the money they make from your donations to help people from all walks of life who need a little help and assistance. In February of 2009, they announced they’d passed the 90 years of service mark.

“Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay is very proud to have reached this milestone in our history of having helped those facing barriers to employment for 90 years. Over these years, we helped more than 100,000 of our community members in need, said John B. Latchford, President & CEO.

“While 2009 poses challenges to the agency as demand for services is rising while funding resources are dwindling, we are confident that Goodwill will continue to be a leader in workforce development. Our 90 years of success at helping the community, even through tough economic periods, not only beckons us to reflect on our accomplishments but gives us the confidence to look toward the future and ensure that we are meeting the community’s needs for the next 90 years,” he added.

According to Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay’s website, ninety-three cents of every dollar donated goes back into helping people in the community. If you’ve donated clothes or furniture before, you’ve helped a lot. To get to the levels like the $20 million recently raised over a year, they need bigger donations – like a car or truck.

Donating your car can give you a break on your taxes and help someone in need – either someone who needs an inexpensive car or someone getting job training paid for by money made by selling your car. Any way you look at it, if you donate a car or truck to Goodwill Industries, it’s a positive. Charity Dispatch can help you donate to any Goodwill Industries location around the country.

Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan Organizes 5k Walk/Run for Shelter

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan started as Asgard Enterprises in 1972. In 1986, Asgard joined with Goodwill Industries International. From there, things really took off. Adapting the model used by other Goodwill Industries, donations of all types play a big role in helping the people of Northern Michigan.

Whether it’s an older wardrobe, a set of furniture, or even a used car, donations are used in many ways to help people. For one, the items are made available for sale at a discounted rate. This helps families and individuals all over the country. Also, though, the money from the sale of the donated items is used to fund programs to help the community. This cycle of helping has allowed Goodwill Industries to change the lives of a lot of people.

In April of 2009, Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan is sponsoring a “Run for Shelter” 5k family friendly run/walk event. The Run for Shelter will take place on April 18, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. in Traverse City, Michigan. Runners of all types are welcome. Events like this show how an organization like Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan can bring people together to help others. Homelessness is a problem all over the country.

If you have a second car that you’re thinking about selling or giving away, consider donating your vehicle to Goodwill Industries instead. Working with a company like Charity Dispatch, you can donate your car to the location of your choice. While a “Walk/Run” is a good way to help raise money to help people, giving people transportation can also go a long way in making them successful in life. Whether the car is sold cheaply to someone who needs it or sold at auction to raise cash to help people in other ways, donating a car can help augment events like the Run for Shelter.

Nearly Ninety Years: Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

While Detroit is known to some as Motor City, home of the American automotive industry, there are other “big players” helping put Detroit on the map. Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit was started in 1921, a couple decades after Goodwill Industries got its start in Boston. Detroit wasted no time in getting up to speed with helping people, though.

They actually officially started as a partnership between Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit and the League for the Handicapped. In 1970, the two organizations split, each going their own separate way to help people in the Detroit area.

As mentioned, when it comes to Detroit, the city is known for its love affair with cars. Goodwill Industries is also known for their cars. Not in the same way, of course, but vehicle donations are an important way Goodwill Industries raises money to fund all the great programs they run in communities all over – from the countryside to the inner city of a large metropolitan place like Detroit.

Donating your car (especially if it was built in Detroit), can help in a lot of ways. For one, it can be used as a tax deduction. Only a certain amount can be claimed, though, since laws were changed a few years ago. Dealing with issues like this is one way Charity Dispatch can help. No matter what Goodwill Industries location you want to donate to, you can rest assured Charity Dispatch will make the process easier for you.

Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit has been around for nearly ninety years, which is a long time. They wouldn’t have been able to survive if it wasn’t for donations from citizens all over the country. From clothes to couches to Chryslers, donating to Goodwill Industries will allow them to help people in your community for the next 90 years to come.

Still Rocking: Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana, Inc. was started in the early 1940s. During their history in the region, they have grown from two employees in the beginning to over 600 employees currently. Their income is over $20 million – money that is needed. They started with no programs to help those less fortunate in the Southeastern Louisiana region, but they now have 13 programs – everything from job training to job placement assistance. All the programs cost money, though.

Their revenue is derived from the sale of donated items. That’s right. Stuff you have in your house that you’re thinking about throwing away or selling can be donated to a local Goodwill Industries location so they can be sold to raise money to sponsor programs that help people in the community. Whether it’s gently used clothes, furniture or even a vehicle, donations to Goodwill Industries go a long way in making sure they have the resources to help people.

Helping people consists of a lot of different things. In Louisiana for example, Goodwill Industries works closely with the Girl Scout Council of Southeast Louisiana. In a yearly program, they allow local girl scouts to bring in items to donate in exchange for a badge for their participation. It’s a great program, just one of the small ways Goodwill Industries goes out of their way around the country when trying to help people.

As mentioned, vehicle donations are one way to help Goodwill Industries help others. Whether the car is sold to someone who needs a ride to a newly found job or auctioned off for money to run other programs, donating your car can help a lot. Not only that, donating your car to Goodwill Industries can be written off as a tax deduction. Laws have changed so you’ll want to make sure you have current information, but donating a vehicle via Charity Dispatch can help you help the people of Southeastern Louisiana.

Goodwill of Greater Washington Goes the Distance

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Goodwill of Greater Washington was incorporated as Goodwill Industries of Washington, DC in 1935 by social worker Elizabeth Murray and six other community leaders. It had taken five years to put together, but the dream of helping people via a local Goodwill Industries organization was finally a reality in the nation’s capital. The actual legal name of the organization is the Davis Memorial Goodwill Industries – because of a $100,000 donation in 1939 by Anne Hubbard Davis.

Today, they’re known for things they’ve done in the past (an annual book sale that has attracted people like Barbara Bush to participate and the Annual Embassy Tours), they’re becoming known more and more for their Fashion of Goodwill Campaign that insists “It’s not your grandmother’s closet” at Goodwill of Greater Washington.

Speaking of clothes and fashion, it’s items like clothes, couches and cars being donated that allow organizations like Goodwill Industries to thrive all over the nation, helping literally thousands of people each and every year. Whether you donate a box of old sweaters (which might mean the world for someone who buys them) or an old Pontiac car in the garage (which also might mean the ability to get to and from work for someone) – your donation makes a difference.

Goodwill of Greater Washington has been around for many decades, and with vehicle and other types of donations, they’ll be able to continue helping people in the country’s capital for years to come. GGW (as it’s known by the locals), currently operates a chain of retail stores, clears millions of square feet of office space, and employs nearly 700 people – over 500 who have a disability or some other disadvantage in life.

If you’ve ever thought about whether you should donate your car to Goodwill Industries or not, don’t think about it anymore. You should. Charity Dispatch can help make the process simpler, sending your car donation to any Goodwill Industries organization across the country.

Goodwill Industries of Central Texas Believes in Work

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Goodwill Industries of Central Texas, founded in 1958 in Austin, Texas, is currently one of the largest employers in Central Texas. From their humble roots (helping 69 people their first year), they’ve grown to be one of the backbones of the Central Texas economy.

Rev. Edgar J. Helms, the original founder of Goodwill Industries in 1902, once described Goodwill Industries as an “industrial program as well as a social service enterprise…a provider of employment, training and rehabilitation for people of limited employability, and a source of temporary assistance for individuals whose resources were depleted.”

Around the country, Goodwill Industries regional offices carry on that mission to help get Americans working. It’s a noble goal, and one that’s paid off over the years, but it takes donations to help keep the system working. Donating cars or other items to Goodwill Industries allows them to create revenue which they use to create or fund programs for citizens in the community. It’s really a great cycle.

With times tough across the country, you might be thinking about hanging on to that second car rather than donating or selling it, but it’s more important than ever to lend a helping hand and donate to Goodwill Industries. There are more people than ever that need help from the programs and services offered by Goodwill Industries around the country.

Without donations – couches, clothes, cars, and everything else – Goodwill Industries won’t be able to help as many people around the country. The good news is that organizations like Charity Dispatch make it easy for you to donate your vehicle to any Goodwill Industries anywhere in the nation. That’s right – from the comfort of your home. If you’ve ever wanted to donate your car to help out Goodwill Industries but were afraid of the work involved, let Charity Dispatch help you.

By the 21st century, Goodwill Industries of Northern New England operates in three states and has 23 retail stores and over 60 service programs for citizens of the region.

Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee Strives to Help

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, founded in 1957, strives to help people with disabilities enter the workforce and become productive members of society. To reach this goal, they depend on people like you donating – clothes, cars, couches, and more. Donating your vehicle to Goodwill Industries can go a long way in helping them make someone’s life a lot better.

Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee Inc. has their headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee. They employ over 1,350 people and serves 46 counties. They run 60 donation sites, 30 retail stores and an outlet store all around central Tennessee. They are middle Tennessee’s largest employer of people with disabilities. It’s this dedication to help that makes their mission so important.

That mission is directly affected by you. While Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee receives revenue from other services they offer (including a workforce of people with disabilities), they receive a lot of their revenue from donations. Without people like you donating a used car or something else, the system would soon break down and Goodwill Industries wouldn’t be able to help as many people as they have over the years.

Donating a car might seem like too much work, or maybe something that won’t actually help anything, but you couldn’t be more wrong. With an organization like Charity Dispatch to help with the process, whether you live in Tennessee or elsewhere in the country, it’s easy to donate your vehicle to Goodwill Industries and help them help people all over.

Although they’re affiliated with the main Goodwill Industries International based in Bethesda, Md., Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee Inc. has their own governing board of directors, which makes them a little different. You can rest assured, though, that they’re helping people throughout Tennessee, and that they’re very transparent about the process, making sure you know where your donation goes.

Goodwill Industries of Arkansas Believes in the Power of Work

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Goodwill Industries was brought to Arkansas in 1927 by Charles E. Moyer, Mayor of Little Rock. A year later, Dr. Edgar J. Helms, founder of Goodwill Industries, stopped by and approved of what he saw. Currently, Goodwill Industries of Arkansas has a few rehabilitation services available, 15 retail stores and two attended donation stations.

As with other locations around the country, they derive most of their revenue from the sales of donated items. From clothes to couches to cars and trucks – donations to Goodwill Industries are used to help people from all walks of life who have run into some hardship or trouble but want to actively improve their life.

Starting January 1, 2005, the burden of determining the value of a donated vehicle went from the person donating the car or truck to the charity accepting the donation. After donating a car, you will usually receive a written document within 30 days letting you know how much money was received for the vehicle and how much you can claim as a deduction on your taxes.

The donation of cars and trucks allows Goodwill Industries of Arkansas to create programs that help assist people with disabilities or disadvantaged situations reach their highest potential with training, employment, and job placement services. Providing on-the-job training, they help people reach their goals of working to be self-sufficient.

One particular program at Goodwill Industries of Arkansas is the Supported Employment program. It’s designed to train individuals who have a severe disability to be able to work in a competitive employment environment. Programs like these are helped by donations from people like you and organizations like Charity Dispatch who make it easy for you to donate your car, wherever you might be.
