Questions to Ask About Car Donation Events and the Charities That Run Them

Events No Comments »

Have you ever wondered what happens to a car or truck after it’s donated to a Goodwill® organization? The donated vehicles are sold, obviously, but where? Well, it all depends on the program and the charity. The vehicles can be sold at an auction, fundraiser, or another charity event. The proceeds from sales are normally used to help those in need.

There are many charitable organizations that run car donation programs. Some are national and some are local. If you want to donate to a local organization to help those in need in your own community, you can either donate a car or attend a charity event and buy one that someone else donated. Either way, you’ll be helping out a great deal.

Large organizations like Goodwill Industries ®have chapters all across America, so you shouldn’t have any problems in finding a good charity nearby. Whether you plan on being a donor yourself or buying a donated vehicle through a non-profit organization, make sure you do a lot of research first.

1. How much money will actually go to the needy? What percentage of sales goes toward the charitable program or service?

2. Does the charity have a good reputation? Or, if a third party is running the event, do they have a good reputation?

3. What types of programs and services will the proceeds go toward helping? Are any of them important to you?

These are three questions you need to ask when you’re taking donate-vehicle events into consideration. Don’t go donating your car or buying someone else’s unless you’re certain that the event is a legitimate one and that good, honest people are in charge of it.

When Goodwill Industries starts putting together its annual list of fundraising events, one of the things that it tries to do is to provide something of value for the community at large. In Washington, one of the primary efforts right now is to get people out into the active world. Good health is a primary concern for both children and aging Americans, so Goodwill wanted to do something to push that agenda even more.

So what has Goodwill done to make the Washington area a little bit healthier and more active? For one, they have done more than just their vehicle donation program to raise money. That is still important to the overall working budget of Goodwill, but it is the other fundraisers that are adding something to the community.

This year, Goodwill Industries across the country will host charity events that involve running and biking. Among them will be a 5K race that promotes people getting into shape and also brings more money to the Goodwill coffers. This money will be added to what is raised with the vehicle donation program, so that Goodwill can go out into the community and do whatever needs to be done. With all of the jobless people in Washington today, that task is becoming even more significant.

Goodwill Industries has realized that just having a vehicle donation program is no way to go about raising money. They also have to have events that bring people in the community together for the betterment of everyone involved. From the charity auctions to the luncheons to things like active 5K races, Goodwill seems to be doing this. That effort, coupled with the already successful vehicle donation program, has provided people with more ways to make their voice heard and put their charitable dollars to work.

Goodwill encourages people to get involved in the community, not just with their money through the vehicle donation program, but also with their time and effort. Help is needed in many areas, and the sense of fulfillment that goes along with participating in one of these events is something that everyone can appreciate and gain from.

Goodwill Industries Helping Youth Summer Employment

Events No Comments »

One of the primary focuses for Goodwill Industries during this tough economic time is helping people find jobs and helping people with the skills that they need in order to keep jobs. Though much of the effort has included helping adults who are out of work, that’s not all that Goodwill is looking to do. In fact, their youth employment effort is as strong now as ever.

When you think about Goodwill Industries, your first though is probably of the time you were asked to donate a car or perhaps when you made the choice to donate your car to charity. Goodwill Industries uses those donations to fund their programs, and for the most part the programs do a lot of good in helping the community achieve more. This is especially true in Washington, D.C., where the job market is especially barren.

During the summer, the charity is jumping on the opportunity to help young people get jobs and learn about the working world. How is Goodwill doing this? They are working hand and hand with job placement groups, and well as individual businesses in order to promote job growth.

The jobs are all different, and they are designed to suit the individual skill sets of the young people who are looking. This is a very important part of the job process, as young adults are learning what they like to do and what their skill set happens to be.

These programs only work when you and others take the time to donate a car or make another donation to Goodwill. Expensive programs don’t pay for themselves, and though it might seem like a huge commitment to donate a car, it actually does more good for the community than you could ever imagine. In Washington, it is incredibly necessary right now, with things looking a little more bleak each and every day.

Summer brings new events for Goodwill Industries

Events No Comments »

When the weather warms up, Goodwill Industries does even more to help the Washington, D.C. community. Summer might be deadly hot in the metro area, but that doesn’t mean that those in charge get to stop and head to the pool. In fact, Goodwill does many of its biggest and best events in June, July, and August.

The theme this summer, according to those in charge, is to get people out and helping any way possible. Sure, they might ask you to donate a car or something of the like, but really it is about making the most of your resources.

Goodwill is going to be hosting more and more donation drops this summer, where you can go drop off anything that is valuable that you don’t need anymore. These things, like clothes, electronics, and furniture, will be sold in the Goodwill thrift stores and also given to community members to help out in times of need. Though most people can’t donate a car and they can’t help out with huge amounts of money, any little thing will help.

This summer will also bring about a more dedicated effort in the vehicle donation program. For those people who might be looking to donate a car, the advertisements will be running on how to make that happen, and it is important that you take the chance to make a donation if you are able. Money and resources are needed in order to earn resources for the many new programs that are going to be coming out in the new year, in addition to the things that are already taking place.

Goodwill Industries knows all about the challenges that it is facing, as well as some of the limitations that go along with living in this day and age. Still, they are going to be going forward with all of the community efforts that have been helping D.C. in the last couple of years, especially the unemployment services.

Goodwill Industries Going Trendy

Events No Comments »

Though most people would not think of Goodwill Industries right off hand when they think of the trendiest business plans out there, they certainly deserve a mention in today’s business climate. The reason for that is because Goodwill is going trendy in an effort to relate to younger potential donors. Young people are some of the people most likely to make donations, so the new Goodwill plan is making it easier for young folks to get in the act.

If you are just out of college or still in school, it’s not likely that you are going to donate your car, but that does not mean that you have to stand on the sidelines. This is why Goodwill is changing their image a little bit, in an effort to attract you even if you can’t donate your car to the charity.

Today, some of the best work goes on at the Goodwill Industries thrift stores. These places are all over the place, and they represent another revenue stream for the charity. If you can’t donate your car to the charity effort, then you can at least spend a few dollars in the stores. This is what they are hoping for out of young people, and it is why they have filled the stores with lots of really nice, attractive stuff.

The stuff that you can buy in the Goodwill Industries stores is somewhat retro right now, though. Vintage is the word that they like to describe their selection, and young folks seem to really like it. From old t-shirts to old jeans, there are some great items that might remind you of the 1980s. Even if your current situation doesn’t allow you to donate your car to charity, the stores can be a place for you to get into the act in a big way.

Goodwill Industries wants just about everyone to be involved, and because of that, they are doing more advertising of their “other” programs. Among them, the retro and vintage gear that you can buy are very important to the overall effort.

D.C. Goodwill Chapter goes new-age with social marketing

Events No Comments »

While the rest of the world is out using the internet for marketing, Goodwill Industries doesn’t want to get left behind. The net is a powerful place, especially if you are spending your time on expansive efforts aimed at young people. Whether it is something like trying to get me to donate my car to charity or advertising for another event, social marketing sites have become the order of the day. With Goodwill in Washington, this is the new direction.

Some might argue that the internet is not the best place to talk to me if you want me to donate my car to charity. But this does not have to be the case. In fact, the internet is just like any other place where companies advertise. It is the new-age media choice, similar to how magazines and newspapers used to be the media choice ten or fifteen years ago.

But it isn’t just using the internet that’s the idea for the DC Goodwill Industries chapter. On top of that, they want to go into the sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace, where more and more advertising can take place. Getting into the world of young people has helped to take Goodwill Industries from being a place where older people donated their cars to a place where young people got their start in philanthropy.

With more and more people joining the social marketing realm, and Twitter becoming the most popular outlet in this day and age, look for Goodwill Industries to step up their effort in the coming months. They want to make sure that they get the word out about the opportunities to donate and they also want to make the donation process as painless as possible for young people and old people alike.

If I were going to donate my car to charity, I want it to be as easy as possible. Goodwill Industries understands that when I choose to donate my car to charity, the internet is a great resource for making that happen. This has helped to elevate their operation to a higher level.

Helping People in Delaware

Events, Other Chapters 14 Comments »

Goodwill Industries of Delaware and Delaware County was incorporated by Rev. J. H. Beauchamp at Asbury Methodist Church in 1921. Since then, they’ve helped countless people make their lives better, not with a “handout,” but with a “help up.” Instead of just giving people money and items, Goodwill Industries works with them to enable them to support themselves through job training and job placement programs.

What started with simple job training programs has developed into a complex system of training over the years that helps even more people become more successful. Their vocational programs are top notch and continually improved upon. Goodwill Industries is a leader when it comes to vocational training and employment education.

Like many other Goodwill Industries locations, Goodwill Industries of Delaware and Delaware County operates in three main ways – Goodwill Stores and Auctions, Goodwill Janitorial Services, and Goodwill Staffing Services. They employ people from all walks of life in each aspect of the business while helping them learn new skills.

The first one – Goodwill Stores and Auctions – is what the organization was founded on at the beginning of the 20th century. For this to continue to be a successful model, they need your donations more than ever. Whether it’s clothes, furniture, or even a vehicle, donating to Goodwill Industries is what allows them to help so many people.

This year, Goodwill Industries of Delaware and Delaware County will hold their 2009 Goodwill Annual Awards Luncheon at the Chase Center on the Riverfront on Friday, May 1, 2009 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Local leaders will be recognized for their contributions. The Luncheon Chair is Michael Berardi, President of Nason Construction. Mark Pryslak, Vice President of WSFS Bank, will act as co-chair. If you live in the area, stop by to show your support of all the great things Goodwill Industries does for the community.

Goodwill Keystone Area was formed when three individual Goodwill Industries locations joined together. Goodwill Industries of Central (Harrisburg), Mid-Eastern (Reading), and Southeastern (Lancaster), PA joined forces to better help people in Pennsylvania. This has been a great move that’s allowed them to help even more people.

This fall, they will hold the Goodwill Runway Show: Secondhand Chic at The Designers’ Place at Vanity Fair Outlets, in Reading, Pennsylvania. Contact Jennifer Schley at 717-525-6208 for more information. Events like this are only a small part of what Goodwill Industries does all over the country.

Using donated items from citizens (even donated cars!), Goodwill Industries is able to generate revenue to fund programs to help with job training and job placement. As a side bonus, the donated items are able to be sold at reasonable prices to people who can’t afford to spend a lot of money. This double combination allows Goodwill Industries to apply their philosophy of “a help up not a hand out.”

One of the best ways to help Goodwill Keystone Area (or any of the other Goodwill Industries) is by donating your vehicle. A large donation like a car or truck can go a long way in helping them help others. Whether it’s by selling the car at a reasonable price to someone who really needs transportation or selling the car at an auction to raise money for other programs, your used vehicle could help make a big difference in someone’s life.

If you’re worried about the process of donating a car, don’t worry! Charity Dispatch can help with the whole process, making it easy for you. If you can afford to donate your vehicle, now is the time to do it. Goodwill Keystone Area likes helping people, but they need your help too.

Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan Organizes 5k Walk/Run for Shelter

Events, Other Chapters 14 Comments »

Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan started as Asgard Enterprises in 1972. In 1986, Asgard joined with Goodwill Industries International. From there, things really took off. Adapting the model used by other Goodwill Industries, donations of all types play a big role in helping the people of Northern Michigan.

Whether it’s an older wardrobe, a set of furniture, or even a used car, donations are used in many ways to help people. For one, the items are made available for sale at a discounted rate. This helps families and individuals all over the country. Also, though, the money from the sale of the donated items is used to fund programs to help the community. This cycle of helping has allowed Goodwill Industries to change the lives of a lot of people.

In April of 2009, Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan is sponsoring a “Run for Shelter” 5k family friendly run/walk event. The Run for Shelter will take place on April 18, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. in Traverse City, Michigan. Runners of all types are welcome. Events like this show how an organization like Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan can bring people together to help others. Homelessness is a problem all over the country.

If you have a second car that you’re thinking about selling or giving away, consider donating your vehicle to Goodwill Industries instead. Working with a company like Charity Dispatch, you can donate your car to the location of your choice. While a “Walk/Run” is a good way to help raise money to help people, giving people transportation can also go a long way in making them successful in life. Whether the car is sold cheaply to someone who needs it or sold at auction to raise cash to help people in other ways, donating a car can help augment events like the Run for Shelter.
