D.C. Goodwill thrift stores becoming more popular

If you have ever heard from the people working at Goodwill Industries, you know how important it is to donate a car to their charity effort. Who would have guessed that Goodwill Industries in Washington does so much more than just solicit used cars, though? In reality, a lot of what they do is out in the open and it doesn’t have anything to do with asking you to donate a car. Their stores can be seen all over the country, and all over the D.C. area.

The Washington chapter of Goodwill Industries currently has one of the most popular thrift store networks in the entire country. There has been quite an effort to make these places more popular, as they are a steady source of revenue, but few places have seen the takeoff that D.C. has experienced. When people purchase stuff from a Goodwill Industries thrift store, the money is being used to augment the money collected when you donate a car. These are smaller donations, though, but they add up over time.

The interesting thing about these thrift stores is that they seem to be encouraging young people to get into the act a little bit more. You might not be surprised to hear that older individuals are more likely to donate a car to charity, so it figures that something else might bring more young folks into the mix. That is exactly what is happening all over the Metro area and the surrounding Washington thrift stores.

The stuff being purchased at Goodwill Industries’ thrift stores can vary wildly in both style and price. Some people go there to shop for vintage t-shirts. Some people go there to find things for themed parties. Others go to find old furniture that they can turn into something great and usable. Whatever the case, this is what helps Goodwill Industries the most, along with the times when someone donates a car to charity. It might be a slightly different demographic doing the donating at these spots, but since it all goes into the same community pot to help with Goodwill programs, it’s all encouraged by the folks in charge.

President Obama helps support D.C. area Goodwill Industries

DC Chapters No Comments »

The D.C. area Goodwill Industries chapters are getting a much needed boost this year. After newly elected President Obama came to power in Washington, things have changed for the better. That goes for a lot of things, including Goodwill Industries and their car donation efforts.

With car donation, it is all about getting the most money to do good works in the community. Many people don’t understand what their money is going to, but they do know that it is very important. Part of the new effort has been letting people know where in the D.C. area their money is going. When people see the impact that their car donation has on the metro area, they are much more likely to give. This is what Goodwill Industries is banking on.

But Obama has helped by lending his support individually to the D.C. area chapters. He has not only shown up at events and given his voice to the organization, but he’s also a champion for service in general. Everyone knows about the car donation program, but Goodwill is looking for more than that. President Obama shares this vision, as he’s been encouraging people both old and young to volunteer their time along with their money.

As more and more people come to help Goodwill Industries in their effort, things get easier and easier. Car donation goes a long way, because the organization gets money whenever a car is donated. But they also need people to execute their programs. Human capital is a little bit more difficult to come by in this day and age, but people now have more time than ever to volunteer.

President Obama continues to work hard on laws that make it easier for organizations like Goodwill Industries to operate. The car donation program is made easier because of the tax relief effort that goes along with the program. The emphasis now must be on improving all of the other aspects of Goodwill’s community effort.

Goodwill Industries in Washington using multiple outlets for community development

DC Chapters No Comments »

The Washington metro community is a better place because of the work of Goodwill Industries. But if you thought they just want you to donate auto parts, then you were sadly mistaken. Goodwill is doing a ton of work in the community, and they are reaching out with a bunch of different means and outlets.

While you might have encountered the fine people of Goodwill Industries with their trying to persuade you to donate auto parts or donate your car, what you should know is that the greater mission is to help out the community at large. That includes their thrift stores, which are very popular and are a big part of the effort. Vehicle donation is a huge deal and it takes up much of the time and effort for the organization, but they put time and effort into the other programs, as well.

With the thrift stores, more money is raised to help out the community. With every item that is donated, more funds can be used to enhance the Washington, D.C. area with after school programs, employment programs, and all sorts of other good stuff. But without the money, Goodwill Industries wouldn’t be able to do what they need to do.

Make no mistake about it, the people at Goodwill Industries are still wanting you to donate auto parts. That is their chief campaign because it brings in the most money. But they do much more than that. The effort in Washington is expanding, and they hope to expand it even more than they already are. The community needs help right now more than it ever has, with more people moving in and more going on. While it is important that you donate auto parts and donate your vehicle, it is also important that you look to help in other ways, too. This is what Goodwill is looking to get out about their organization, and it’s worth taking notice.

The untold story of Goodwill’s vehicle donation program

DC Chapters No Comments »

When it comes time to donate your car to charity, you should be getting a little bit of information about where the money is going. For the Washington, D.C. chapter, the new emphasis is on letting individuals know exactly where their donation dollars are going. They want people to understand more about the process than meets the eye.

So what does this mean for the Goodwill Industries chapter in D.C.? It means a renewed commitment to you when you donate your car. Behind the scenes, there is much, much more to know. The first question, of course, is what happens to the money? You are donating a car, and the benefits are great for both you and the organization. But what about the specifics?

If we are talking about what happens in D.C. with the money, we have to start with the programs, both new and old, that are funded by the money from auto donation. With the economy in its current state, this means job programs and after work programs. The agenda focuses almost completely on the community and its development. When the community gets better, we all win, so that is what Goodwill Industries in Washington is looking to enhance.

Behind the scenes, things are going on with Goodwill that you might not have ever guessed. When they ask you to donate your car, it is about much more than just that single donation. You need to understand that what you are doing is touching people in the entire Metro community. D.C. gets better with every car that is donated to Goodwill, which is why it is important that you continue to donate your car to charity.

Charity efforts are incredibly important, especially when times get bad. Goodwill is hoping that people remember that others are important, even when their own situation might not be the best. When you donate your car, you can help and they will let you know exactly where those donation dollars are headed.

Goodwill Industries in DC teams up with Dell to promote program

DC Chapters No Comments »

Just about everyone knows about car donation, but charity work in DC has grown to include much more than that. In 2008, Goodwill Industries chapters all over Washington got together with the Dell computer company to form what they hoped would be a rewarding and helpful program. That program sought to give people another avenue for disposing their old computers, and it focused a great deal of its effort on educating people about positive environmental changes. This program hoped to add to the already expanding car donation program headed by Goodwill Industries and in turn get people used to donating their old products.

After a few months of successful implementation of the joint venture, it appears that people all over the DC area are taking full advantage of the opportunity. Car donation has long been a leading cause for each and every one of the Goodwill chapters across the United States, but the folks in DC are looking to do more for the community than just that. With this program, computers are being recycled if that is possible, and they’re being disposed of in proper form if they can’t be reused. This has helped to fix a large problem that was facing the community, with potentially harmful computers and potentially useful computers being thrown out in ways that just didn’t work.

While Dell has lent his support in many ways, the folks at Goodwill Industries have been primarily responsible for collecting and re-marketing the computers all over the DC area. With their car donation program, money has been raised for all sorts of different uses. This program is somewhat different from car donation, though, as it seeks to provide technology to people all over Washington. Those who might not have had access to technology and information before are now able to learn how to use a computer.

This is yet another example of the expanding role and influence of Goodwill Industries in helping the Washington metro community. Car donation was the starting point, and remains one of their top priorities, but new programs like this one have become commonplace, as well.
