Goodwill of Greater Washington was incorporated as Goodwill Industries of Washington, DC in 1935 by social worker Elizabeth Murray and six other community leaders. It had taken five years to put together, but the dream of helping people via a local Goodwill Industries organization was finally a reality in the nation’s capital. The actual legal name of the organization is the Davis Memorial Goodwill Industries – because of a $100,000 donation in 1939 by Anne Hubbard Davis.
Today, they’re known for things they’ve done in the past (an annual book sale that has attracted people like Barbara Bush to participate and the Annual Embassy Tours), they’re becoming known more and more for their Fashion of Goodwill Campaign that insists “It’s not your grandmother’s closet” at Goodwill of Greater Washington.
Speaking of clothes and fashion, it’s items like clothes, couches and cars being donated that allow organizations like Goodwill Industries to thrive all over the nation, helping literally thousands of people each and every year. Whether you donate a box of old sweaters (which might mean the world for someone who buys them) or an old Pontiac car in the garage (which also might mean the ability to get to and from work for someone) – your donation makes a difference.
Goodwill of Greater Washington has been around for many decades, and with vehicle and other types of donations, they’ll be able to continue helping people in the country’s capital for years to come. GGW (as it’s known by the locals), currently operates a chain of retail stores, clears millions of square feet of office space, and employs nearly 700 people – over 500 who have a disability or some other disadvantage in life.
If you’ve ever thought about whether you should donate your car to Goodwill Industries or not, don’t think about it anymore. You should. Charity Dispatch can help make the process simpler, sending your car donation to any Goodwill Industries organization across the country.
